Fun & Safe Springtime Activities for Someone with Dementia

Fun & Safe Springtime Activities for Someone with Dementia

If you would like to make the most of the spring season with a loved one living with dementia, engaging in a variety of spring activities can be a great way to boost moods and keep your loved one active.

Here are some safe and fun activities:

  1. Gardening is therapeutic, encourages engagement and can be adapted to your loved one’s abilities. Consider container gardening or raised beds to make it more accessible.
  2. Nature Walks are a good way to enjoy the outdoors while also getting some gentle exercise. Choose well-maintained, flat paths in safe areas, and keep outings short to prevent fatigue.
  3. Picnics are simple and can be in a local park or even your backyard. The change of scenery can be refreshing.  Comfortable seating and familiar foods are important for enjoyment.
  4. Bird Watching can be an engaging and simple way to connect with nature. Set up a bird feeder outside a window where your loved one can watch birds come and go.
  5. Arts and Crafts using natural materials can be both a creative and sensory activity. Collect leaves, flowers, and twigs during a short walk and use them later to create art or crafts.
  6. Listening to spring sounds is calming and helps one feel connected to nature. Spend time sitting outside together listening to birds chirping, early bees or wind blowing in the trees.
  7. Capturing and reviewing photos later can be a joyful activity and help with recall. Take a camera or smartphone with you on your outings and capture the beauty of spring.
  8. Outdoor Performances that are not too long or too loud can be enjoyable for you both. If your local community hosts outdoor concerts or plays, consider attending one.
  9. Simple Outdoor Games like tossing a ball back and forth or playing with a frisbee can be great exercise and elevate mood - depending on the person's mobility and coordination.
  10. Visit a Farmer's Market to socialize and engage with the community in a low-pressure setting. Seeing and smelling the fresh spring produce can be an enjoyable activity.

Doing activities together enhances the quality of life for someone with dementia and can also provide valuable bonding moments for both of you. Always prioritize safety and the individual's comfort level, adjusting activities as needed.  Visit our resource center at Mosaic-solutions.co for more insight and information to help you care for a loved one living with dementia.
